Construction Documents Using Sketchup Pro 2020

$40.00

Construction Documents Using Sketchup Pro 2020 is the first major follow-up to the successful publication of the same name from 2013. It was the first ever book on the subject of using SketchUp Pro for documentation. SketchUp has been developed extensively since that time, and these changes are reflected in this publication.

The course is hands-on rather than being a reference manual. While such manuals are a vital resource and I would definitely recommend having them as companions for this book, they don’t provide the same kind of focussed workflows to be found here. There are reference sections in this book which explain the various tools and settings we’re using in isolation.

This book “starts at the end”. The end result is shown on the book cover so you know what to expect. You get the satisfaction of seeing incremental progress in your model building as the course proceeds.

What will you get from this book?

By following the exercises in this book, you will be competent at 3D modelling a house model, and creating live, updatable 2D plans/ sections from it. In addition, you will understand how to build 3D details from your model. Finally, you will be able to present these drawings in LayOut as final completed documents.

Who should read this book?

This book is for anyone involved in creating documentation for Construction whether architect, builder, engineer, interior designer or DIY enthusiast.

It is recommended that the user should be familiar with SketchUp’s tools and concepts before attempting the exercises in this book. While the lessons are quite self-contained, familiarity with modelling, navigating the model space, and model management is strongly advised.

Description

This is a detailed step-by-step guide to building a house model from scratch and transforming it into finished construction documents. The contents includes two model files containing embedded components that are inserted during the modelling process.

Why should you read this book?

If you’re looking for the most immediate way to access SketchUp Pro for construction documentation then this book is for you. The workflows contained here are the same ones that the author has developed over years to execute the successful design and construction of multiple projects, both domestic and commercial.

This course was formulated from years of experience not only using SketchUp in practise but teaching professionals and students from many different backgrounds. Written by an experienced architect who has used SketchUp to design and project-manage every kind of project from a house extension to commercial office buildings, it has been shaped by the practise of design and building.

This book illustrates some of the best professional workflows you’ll find anywhere. Learning the tools is fundamentally important, but more than that we need to understand how tools and settings work in context. The course is built entirely around project work. Each page is carefully designed to make it easy to understand each step.

SketchUp and BIM

SketchUp’s unique blend of user friendliness, flexibility and extendability means that it has quite an unlimited potential as a BIM tool.

While certain tasks are handled better by other platforms, they are limited to a particular speciality. Not so with SketchUp, which can be used for a myriad of purposes. For example:

  • 3D virtual tours
  • Construction sequencing
  • Cost reports and analysis
  • Energy analysis/ strategy appraisal
  • Photographic Renders (using extensions)
  • Clash Detection
  • Online Collaboration
  • Component Cataloguing
  • Parametric Modelling
  • IFC Classification
  • Construction Documentation (CAD)
  • Accessible Program Interface (Program Extendability)
  • Shadow studies

This list is by no means exhaustive.

SketchUp is not hampered by large file sizes or complex automated (“Parametric”) components.
If you need to model an object quickly you don’t need to programme an object or look into a dialogue box. Sharing files is instantaneous.

SketchUp Pro is used by both small and large organisations ranging from one-man operations to multinationals. Here are some examples of SketchUp for BIM in action:

1 review for Construction Documents Using Sketchup Pro 2020

  1. Michael Coughlan (verified owner)

“This book really helped me get beyond the basics of SketchUp into professional modelling. It quickly shows how to take control of the model to display it in plan, section and elevation format. It contains tips, shortcuts and workflows that I hadn’t found anywhere else which I would say are fundamental to using SketchUp as a work horse to run and manage a modern drawing office.

The totally project based approach really helps to easily approach the challenging learning hurdles. The satisfaction of building a model step by step makes the exercises very engaging. For anyone who has gone beyond the basics in SketchUp and is ready for the next level I would recommend this book as a must for all construction professionals.”
